ALGA There are other problems with lakes and ponds besides submerged or emergent weeds. Perhaps you have seen something like the following in your lake or pond. The picture shows an algal bloom. Most commonly called a scum or mat, it is actually a plant that appears when the temperature and phosphorous content of the water reach a mutally helpful stage. There are many types of blooms, only one is shown here. Their appearance indicates a water chemistry problem: mainly phosphorous, from somewhere, is contaminating the water body. |
